Index two Differential-Algebraic Equations arise in the mathematical modelling of Chemical Engineering systems under transient conditions. The problems associated with the numerical solution of such mathematical systems are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the strategies employed to control the integration errors. The unsuitability of error control techniques traditionally used for ordinary differential equation systems is demonstrated. Possible alternatives and their practical implementation are discussed. Numerical results arising from the solution of an index two DAE system describing a plate distillation column are presented.
