3 new cases of unusual congenital uterine malformations are presented and present knowledge of the development of the Mullerian system and the anomalies that arise when this development is interrupted are reviewed. Case histories are given of 3 patients in whom at laparotomy masses replacing the uterus were found to be composed of smooth muscle and leiomyomata without any cavity. The vagina was absent in 1 case there was a blind pouch in 1 and only a dimple in the other. The kidneys were misplaced but functioned normally in all 3 cases. The development of the female genital organs is outlined from the earliest stages at the 3rd week of fetal life. In the development of the Mullerian system characteristic anomalies of the reproductive system result from maldevelopment at each stage. Abnormalities of vaginal development are usually associated with similar abnormalities of the structures of Mullerian origin. Development of the vagina is dependent upon contributions from the Mullerian ducts and the urogenital sinus.
