Abstract

Abstract Expert database systems represent a new class of system architectures that support knowledge-based applications requiring access to large, shared databases. This paper explores the concepts, took, techniques and architectures that comprise this new and dynamic field. Expert database systems allow the specification, prototyping and implementation of knowledge-based information systems that represent a vertical extension beyond the well-defined, predictable, transaction-oriented systems to those with knowledge-directed reasoning and interpretation under conditions of uncertainty.
