T HE CONCEPT OF TRIBALISM is gaining increasing usage among students of African social and cultural change. Other concepts, like Africanism and Negritude, are also finding wide usage; but tribalism is heard more often, for what it connotes rather than for what it denotes. For it is used as a synonym for ethnocentrism, and many persons are interested in the limiting influence of ethnocentrism today. Nevertheless, this use neglects certain significant variables which make tribalism more than mere ethnocentrism. The orientation of this paper, however, is denotative rather than connotative.
