Breastfeeding has increased over eight years in Scotland. Less than half can be explained by demographic change in maternal age. However present breastfeeding targets are unlikely to be met. Maternity units should be urged to participate fully in the UNICEF U.K. Baby Friendly Initiative. Effective interventions prior to pregnancy are required so that more young men and women want their babies to be breastfed.
