Pollen Transmission of Plastid–DNA Under Genotypic Control in Petunia hybrida Hort

Among 19 inbred lines of Petunia hybrida Hort crossed as male parents with a homogeneous Yellow-virescent mutant (Yv) showing strict maternal inheritance, one consistently produced F1 progenies containing up to 2% of individuals with green sectors. This line was used to contrive a tester possessing this genotype, on one hand, and the Petunia parodii plastome, on the other. With this tester, it was possible to demonstrate, through the presence of a 7.4-kbp restriction fragment, that the cp-DNA from the green sectors is of pollinic origin. It is, therefore, concluded that genotypes do exist that control pollen transmission of intact plastids, even in a species having consistently exhibited strict maternal inheritance.
