Mycotic “Mycotic Aneurysm” of the Aorta Due to<i>Aspergillus fumigatus</i>

Abstract

The case presented is the first reported instance of fungal mycotic aneurysm of the ascending aorta not associated with fungal endocarditis or a contiguous focus of fungal infection. Aspergillus fumigatus was the etiologic agent. The patient was a renal transplant recipient who was receiving immunosuppressive therapy. The primary source of the disseminated infection appeared to be the lung. Infection of the aortic wall appeared to result from direct penetration by fungi circulating in the lumen of the aorta.
