Considers prospects for the restoration of adobe churches in New Mexico, USA; the only state in America where a vernacular tradition persists. The article emphasises that the restoration process should involve the guardian of the vernacular tradition - the Villagers at actual labour of restoration. Concludes that professional restorers can grow in experience and learn from those whose lives and history are closely bound to their architecture.
