<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper is concerned with an extensive study of torque transfer in braking, with the objective of developing a test dynamometer capable of providing reliable data for the design of automotive brakes and brake linings. The studies discussed here show that, because of torque transfer, the four brakes of an automobile are not usually in balance. The factors that cause this transfer cannot be adequately represented in a single brake dynamometer and the dual brake dynamometer is offered as a new tool in brake testing that can be used advantageously in correlating road and dynamometer tests and may even provide more reliable test data than can test cars.</div></div>
