Abstract

Over the past 6 years the Chair in Railway Engineering at the University of Pretoria, Amtrak, and Spoornet collaborated in various infrastructure maintenance projects. During the course of these projects, the need to develop the philosophies of Railway Infrastructure Maintenance Management became apparent. These philosophies were developed and expanded by the Chair in Railway Engineering at the University of Pretoria with the support of Spoornet and Amtrak to cover all fields of railway engineering. These philosophies will be presented in this paper. Amtrak is developing and implementing a track maintenance management system (AMM{TRACK}) for use on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) high speed mainline. The approach used at Amtrak to make the system operational will be presented and the experience gained using the system up to the conference date will be reported on in the presentation.
