Abstract

Characterization of blended and rejuvenated binders is important in the selection of new asphalt binder/recycling agents in the design of recycled asphalt mixtures and for suppliers to produce specific binder grades based on properties of available materials. The current methods for characterization of blended or rejuvenated binders are based on traditional viscosity/penetration parameters. There are several shortcomings in these methods and the Performance-Graded (PC) binder specification, developed by SHRP, has been implemented by highway agencies to answer these shortcomings. However, the SHRP binder specification did not include blended and rejuvenated binders or modified asphalt cements. Research was conducted to study the time-temperature dependency of blended and rejuvenated binders with four asphalt binders and recycling agents. The main objective of this research was to characterize blended and rejuvenated binders with PG testing parameters and with their master curves parameters.
