Abstract

Abstract Following a brief history of the genus Enhydrosoma Boeck, 1872 a redescription of E. curticauda Boeck, 1872 is given, based on material from Norway and the North Sea. From this and a literature review of the known character states in all species of Enhydrosoma and Cletodes Brady, 1872 it is concluded that: (a) the species E. franklini Thistle, 1980 must be moved to the genus Enhydrosomella Monard, 1935; (b) the species E. buchholtzi (Boeck, 1872), E. curvirostre (T. Scott, 1894), E. bifurcarostratum Shen & Tal, 1965, E. barnishi Wells, 1967 and E. vervoorti Fiers, 1987 have greater affinities with Cletodes than with Enhydrosoma and should be removed to new genera; (c) the species E. uniarticulatum Borutzky, 1928, E. breviarticulatum Shen & Tal, 1964, E. birsteini Borutzky, 1971, E. radhakrishnai Ranga Reddy, 1977 and E. longum Shen & Tal, 1979, which are all found in fresh- or brackish-water lakes in Asia, can be distinguished from Enhydrosoma by the possession of a 1-segmented P4 endopod and are assigned to Kollerua gen. nov. Finally a generic diagnosis is given for Enhydrosoma and Kollerua.
