A combination of a molecular imprinting technique and precipitation polymerization was applied to develop novel azithromycin-imprinted poly(methacrylic acid-<italic>co</italic>-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) nanoparticles for sustained release of azithromycin (AZM).
