Abstract

Based on personal accounts from the Archives of the Stazione, this paper traces the development of Anton Dohrn's personality. His inner motivations, his personal experiences, and the external factors and traditions that led to the foundation of the Naples Zoological Station are described. Dohrn strove for a greater degree of organization in science. The paper investigates the factors helping to achieve this goal and outlines the influence that the Naples Station had on the foundation of other institutions.
