Activity-directed fractionation of a Crinum jagus methanol extract used in traditional medicine as an antibacterial agent gave four alkaloids, lycorine, hamayne, crinamine and 6-hydroxycrinamine. Only crinamine showed strong antibacterial activity. Neither the extracts nor the alkaloids possess any antifungal activity.
