2nd year death rates in less developed countries are discussed. They usually are as high as those of infant mortality. After age 6 months and through the 2nd year infectious disease and malnutrition are the main causes of death. Malnutrition leaves the child vulnerable to infection; both malnutrition and infection can be prevented through public health efforts. The 2nd year death rate is a practical index of community malnutrition. The 2nd year death rate and the infant mortality rate are measures of social and environmental health in less developed countries. Death rates in early childhood ages 1-4 respond promptly to improved social conditions.
