In the simulation-of electromagnetic transients using time-domain programs like the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), a user must select the model or models which are most suitable to the particular simulation at hand. The EMTP provides a number of choices which have limitations, advantages and disadvantages. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the cable models available in the EMTP and gives practical guidelines for their use. A number of examples illustrate the recommendations.
