The concept of controlled flow in open channels (gate-stroking) has previously been applied to a single channel pool with a control gate at each end; this paper shows how the concept can be applied to a series of any number of pools separated by control gates. The application is illustrated for a series of three pools, separated by underflow gates, the series also originating and terminating in underflow gates both with reservoir conditions on the other side. Three typical demand changes were considered: flow initiation, flow arrest, and flow change. The results of all gate-stroking calculations were confirmed by analysis. The effects on the transient and residual disturbances, of single-speed and two-speed linear approximations to the stroking-designed gate motions were studied for the flow arrest case.
