Abstract

Flash column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC separation of commercial crude quassin (extract of Quassia amara L.) yielded, in addition to known compounds quassin, neoquassin, paraine, nigakilactone A and 18-hydroxyquassin, a new quassinoid lactol named quassialactol (1). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and chemical conversion.
