Abstract

We must always have old memories and young hopes This paper analyzes the development of the theory of Riemann surfaces and complex spaces, with emphasis on the work of Rie-mann, Klein and Poincare ́ in the nineteenth century and on the work of Behnke-Stein and Cartan-Serre in the middle of this cen-tury.
