I N most organisms, for the largest part of their chromosome complement, the phase between fertilization and meiosis is diploid and that between meiosis and fertilization is haploid. Further, most organisms fall into two contrasting categories: in "lower" organisms multiplication is confined to the haplophase, which is much more extended than the diplophase; in "higher" ones, the reverse occurs.
