Abstract

Chromosome counts on British Salicornia confirm the presence of two series, diploids with 2n = 18, and tetraploids with 2n = 36. These two series differ in size of pollen, stomatal guard cells and seeds; and also in general morphology. An attempt is made to correlate these numbers with the taxa generally recognised as being present in the British flora. The plants are self-compatible, and appear usually to be self-pollinated, though there is limited evidence for occasional anemophily and possible out-breeding. Infra-specific variation may be attributed to the presence of numerous virtually pure-breeding races perpetuated by autogamy.
