Eight patients with hemoptysis but with normal chest roentgenograms were examined with a 5.2-mm flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope to determine the extent of the tracheobronchial tree available for inspection. All third order, 74 per cent of fourth order, and 38 per cent of fifth order bronchi were entered. Beyond these limits of bronchoscopic entrance, all fourth order, 86 per cent of fifth order, and 56 per cent of sixth order bronchi were visualized. This instrument makes available a far greater amount of the bronchial tree for inspection and for collection of specimens than has previously been available.
