Abstract Gender stereotypes continue to impose restrictions and limitations on both women and men. Social learning and social cognition theory provide vehicles for better understanding how gender stereotypes develop and, consequently, how they can be changed. Gender stereotypes are examined within a framework that includes perceptions, attributions, expectancies, assumptions, and standards. Implications for therapy with couples are discussed.
