Abstract

The importance of spatial and temporal scaling to the study of biological systems and processes has long been recognized. We demonstrate that concepts derived from fractal and chaos theory are fundamental to the description and modelling of scalerelated phenomena in biology, from the molecular to ecosystem levels of organization. Algorithms for estimating the fractal dimension are described, and numerous applications of fractal theory in the biological sciences are summarized.
