Abstract This paper describes the application of various processing methods lo a synoptic set of satellite-sea data obtained from the Solent area on the south coast of England. The methods include ‘darkest pixel’ correction, sun angle and radiometric corrections, chromaticity analysis, atmospheric and surface corrections and the use of the satellite sensor response curves. It is shown that the use of a simple atmospheric/surface correction algorithm, based on atmospheric optical transmission theory, provides the most accurate method of estimating estuarine suspended sediment concentration from the satellite data above.
