Abstract Amoeba proteus was ultrasonically irradiated, the ultrasonic mean output intensity being about 0.4 W/cm 2 at 1 MHz. Contractions of amoebae, rotations and aggregation of intracellular particles and cell membrane damages were observed. At even lower ultrasonic intensities sodium pinocytosis was found to increase after application of ultrasound.
