Abstract

In the presence of attackers reliable and trustworthy operation of mobile ad hoc networks is impossible without secure routing protocols. Within the research community many different approaches have been suggested usually for standalone mobile ad hoc network (MANET) scenarios. However, most use-cases for MANET involve the usage of additional network interfaces or even Internet access. In this paper a novel secure routing protocol based on AODV for infrastructure-based MANET is proposed. The security of AODV-SEC is based on a centralized PKI and takes into account the specific requirements for security needed in a MANET environment. The evaluation of AODV-SEC proves the functionality of the protocol and provides information on its performance. Further, the results highlight that cryptographic operations have a great impact on protocol performance.
