The Tiku-Suresh (1990) method of estimation is studied in detail with reference to a very wide family of symmetric distributions which range from normal to Cauchy. It is shown that the Tiku-Suresh estimators of location and scale parameters based on complete or type II censored samples are, in fact, highly efficient. A procedure for testing an assumed value of the location parameter is developed.
