Bailey and Love (1949) begin their section on appendicitis with these words: " Over 3,000 persons die annually from acute appendicitis in England and Wales alone. Many of them are in youth or the prime of life. Practically aIf these lives could be saved if an early diagnosis were made, and, at this stage, the comparatively simple operation of appendicectomy carried out. The importance of the stibject cannot be overstated." Recent years have seen an improvement in the saving of lives, though not necessarily in early diagnosis.
