Abstract

The etiology of the hyperlipemia observed in the nephrotic syndrome has been the subject of many papers in recent years. The results of these stud- ies, although not mutually exclusive, have been interpreted in a variety of ways. The authors attribute this lipemia to an increase in the syn- thesis of lipids by the liver (1-4) joined to an in- creased hepatic protein synthesis (5), a deficiency of serum albumin (6), or the appearance of an antagonist to clearing factor in the circulating blood (7). A recent study by Saffran and Kalant (8) explained the hyperlipemia on the basis of "an increased hepatic synthesis and discharge of lipid" and "a decreased ability to remove chylomicron lipid from circulation."
