Operational and economic requirements in most polymerization processes involve three problems for process control and process automation, the most frequent one being quality control, followed by product change and load change. The application of a combined approach for process control and optimization to a load change scenario in an industrial polymerization process is described which combines nonlinear dynamic trajectory optimization with linear, time variant model predictive control and an extended Kalman filter.
