A new mononuclear pentacoordinate Co<sup>II</sup> SMM was synthesized and associated with <italic>trans</italic>-[Ru<sup>III</sup>(salen)(CN)<sub>2</sub>]<sup>−</sup> to form a trinuclear complex without SMM properties.
