Abstract

Analysis of the iodinatcd components of the thyroids of fetuses from mothers given radioiodine prior to legal abortion (Japan) indicated ability to concentrate iodide at 1.4 weeks and ability to synthesize organic iodine compounds at 15 to 19 weeks. In 2 ancncephalic fetuses the thyroid was able to synthesize the normal thyroidal iodine compounds.
