This paper presents a modified optimal controller for an interconnected power system. The design method does not need the specification of weighting matrices. The eigenvalues of electromechanical and exciter modes would be shifted to a prespecified vertical strip. For practical implementation, the design method only uses partial output feedback. For demonstrating the effectiveness of damping enhancement, eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear simulation results are used to show that the proposed controller gives significant improvement in the dynamic performance of the interconnected power system.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
