SUMMARY Isolates C 431 and DGEV of apple stem‐grooving virus infected Zucchini squash ( Cucurbita maxima ) and pumpkin ( C. pepo ) systemically; these hosts were superior to Chenopodium quinoa for propagating the virus. Virus concentrations were assayed by counts of local lesions on cowpea ( Vigna sinenis ). Good yields of virus were concentrated from Zucchini squash sap clarified with bentonite or chloroform‐bentonite and purified by densitygradient centrifugation and zone electrophoresis. Filamentous virus particles 615 nm (C 431 ) and 640 nm (DGEV), virtually free of host constituents and only slightly aggregated, were observed in electronmicrographs.
