Control strategies for an interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine suitable for field weakening are considered. Different control approaches that identify a robust and fast torque control scheme are investigated. A flux-oriented frame based on a flux observer is chosen. An allowable operating area in the state plane is selected, and the related boundaries are implemented in the control scheme. Simulated behavior is given, together with the experimental behavior obtained with a prototype drive.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
