Born free: The germanium compound [(tBu2MeSi)3Ge]+[B(C6F5)4]− (2), is obtained as extremely moisture-sensitive dark red crystals by the treatment of the germyl radical 1 with [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]− in benzene. The molecular structure of 2, determined by X-ray crystallography, suggests that 2 is a free germyl cation without π-bond conjugation, with no interaction with either solvent molecules or counteranion.
