A PNC linkage has been realized by the formation of a stable isocyano azaphosphatranium ion with a facile synthesis. Subsequent thermal or Lewis acid catalyzed isomerization of the isocyanide derivative to its cyanide isomer (see scheme) was carried out and followed by 31P NMR spectroscopy. Both compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography.
