Abstract

SUMMARY 1. This paper presents three cases of urethral carcinoma developing after total cystectomy for carcinoma of the bladder. 2. The urethras from thirty‐three male patients dying with vesical carcinoma were studied microscopically. Foci of carcinoma in situ were found in six urethras. No such changes were observed in thirty‐four urethras from patients dying of malignant disease other than carcinoma of the bladder. The histological features of the lesions are described and illustrated. 3. It is suggested that the presence of such foci of carcinoma in situ is further evidence for the multicentric origin of urothelial tumours and indicates that urethral carcinomas associated with bladder cancers are often independent primary growths rather than implants.
