Initial and final molecular states as ‘‘virtual states’’ in two-photon processes

Abstract

The expression for the cross section of a two-photon process is derived. It is shown, in contrast to the usual statements in the literature, that both initial and final molecular states should be included in the summation over virtual states. For the case of vibrational Raman scattering these extra terms contribute very little to the scattering tensor.
