Abstract

Summary Forty consecutive patients requiring augmentation of labour were treated with intravenous prostaglandin E2 and matched for age, parity, maturity, cervical dilatation and analgesia with 40 patients whose labour was augmented with intravenous oxytocin. The augmentation/delivery interval, the mean basal uterine tone, the mean frequency of contractions, nausea, vomiting, ketosis, pyrexia and late fetal heart decelerations were all significantly higher in the oxytocin group.
