Abstract The copolymerization of dimethyl dially ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and acryl amide results in deviations from the MAYO‐Lewis model. Monomer reactivity ratios can be determined precisely within limited ranges of the monomer ratio. The values of r 1 and r 2 depend on the content of DMDAAC in the initial comonomer solution as well as on the total concentration of both comonomers. These experimental results can be explained by assciation of the cationic monomer and by electrostatic interactions.
