The effect of pore size on the radiolytic production of hydroxyl radicals has been investigated in silica controlled pore glasses (CPGs) by means of the HO.-induced conversion of coumarin into 7-hydroxycoumarin (7-OHC). Production of 7-OHC decreases with decreasing pore size (see plot). This effect is not attributed to the capture of HO. at the water/silica interface but to the modified diffusion regime in such confined environments.
