Large-scale defect-free high quality graphene was synthesized by a mechanochemical process. The surface chemistry and functional properties of the Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>nanoparticles anchored on graphene were studied for the sensitive detection of nitrite from various water sources.
