Type III bursts and related flare activity are investigated during periods of 1959 when Lockheed and Sacramento Peak were simultaneously observing the sun The effects of flare area, surges, related noise-storm activity, and position on the disk upon the probability of the production of type III bursts by flares are discussed. The flash phase is identified as the flare time most relevant to the generation of type III bursts The possibility is noted that certain type III bursts may be unrelated to flares.
