Alumina powders containing controlled amounts of hard aggregates exhibit isothermal shrinkage rates which decrease markedly with increasing aggregate content. Sintered densities achieved after 1‐ and 24‐h anneals decreased linearly with aggregate content. The microstructures of regions near aggregates and within aggregates showed that the compacts sinter differently inside and outside the aggregates.
