Abstract

Impulsive stimulated Brillouin scattering is used to characterize anomalous and highly dispersive acoustic behavior, including heavily overdamped acoustic motion, in KD <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> PO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</inf> crystals near the structural phase transition temperature T <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">c</inf> . Photoelastic and electrooptic effects are observed to diverge near T <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">c</inf> , suggesting applications in efficient light modulation and switching.
