The presence of lysosome-like particles has been demonstrated histochemically in the various tissues of the root tips of Vicia faba. The behaviour of the enzyme acid phosphatase has been investigated in cells from the root cap and developing protoxylem elements. The evidence presented may be interpreted as supporting the concept that self digestion of the cell contents occurs by the release of hydrolytic enzymes from the lysosomes in the cells studied.
