The research reported here is an investigation into the development of a computer program with general problem solving capabilities. This investigation involved the construction of one such computer program called the General Problem Solver (GPS, although more properly GPS-2-6) which was accomplished by modifying an existing program conceived in 1957 by A. Newell, J. C. Shaw, and H. A. Simon.
